A deadly Florida jet crash, a tight midterm election eve, record gas prices, floods, and an NFL scare headline this Election Day edition of World News Tonight.
Plane Crash in Florida
A Learjet 60 crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people on board. Officials said the aircraft took off from Austin, Texas, at 10:37 a.m. Sunday, bound for the Bahamas.
- Flight sequence: At 12:47 p.m., one of the pilots told air traffic control that the aircraft was experiencing icy conditions and turbulence. The crew reported light, clear ice that was manageable and moderate turbulence. The pilots requested a climb to 37,000 feet. Less than 30 seconds later, Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft appearing to enter a strong storm cell before it plunged.
- Descent: The aircraft descended at 32,000 feet per minute before striking a residential street. The impact left a large crater.
- Distress call: The pilot declared a mayday and was heard saying that the crew was going to crash into the ground.
- Debris and damage: Debris spread as far as half a mile, damaging homes and injuring at least one person on the ground.
- Investigation: Federal investigators stated that the aircraft may have broken apart in midair. Analysts reviewing video frame by frame said an image appears to show part of the tail missing. Investigators said that tail section would have allowed the crew to recover from the dive. Investigators also said parts of the aircraft may lie some distance from the impact site. Storms in the area slowed the work at the scene. Authorities are also examining the weather conditions on Sunday.
- Crew: A family member told ABC News that 20-year-old Natalia Cadelia Figueres was one of two pilots at the controls. She reportedly obtained her pilot's license while in high school.
- Victims: Adam Robinson and his wife, Helen Sharp, and their two children, Charlie, age two, and Emma, age four, were on board. In a joint statement, the families said the victims "touched so many lives."
Midterm Elections
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. The midterm elections will determine control of Congress. ABC News will provide live coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern and continuing through the early morning hours. The broadcast will be anchored from ABC News Election Headquarters in New York, with correspondents in Alaska, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Maine, and other states.
Early Voting

He spoke for more than 23 minutes before mentioning the election. The pool renovations cost taxpayers more than $16 million. Trump has held 28 rallies, largely in states he won previously. During the event, he said that the sitting president does not usually win midterm elections, but that his campaign had "a very strong shot."
Michigan Senate Race
Republican Mike Rogers faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. Democratic primary candidate Haley Stevens, who lost the primary to El-Sayed, endorsed Rogers at a church event. El-Sayed called the endorsement a distraction and said voters should focus on costs for gas, groceries, and health care. Rogers stated that several Democratic officials in the state would not vote for El-Sayed because he is too extreme.
Texas Senate Race
Democrat James Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton. Talarico described the race as David versus Goliath, with Texas voters as his "slingshot."
Court Rulings
- The U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's request that California set aside 20,000 ballots. The administration claimed those ballots could have been cast by non-citizens.
- One day earlier, a federal judge in Alaska rejected the administration's effort to intervene in the Alaska Senate race.
